A lot of talk going around the marketplace suggests that phosphate-containing commercial dishwashing detergents are likely to be banned for their harmful effects. Whether these rumors do take shape remains to be seen but in case of such a worst case scenario, are we expected to sit back and eat out of dirty dishes? Obviously not, there is always a backup plan to fall back on. You can consider making your very own dish cleaning and scouring powder at home. Moreover, with the prices of present eco-friendly brands such as Seventh Generation and EcoVer skyrocketing, having your own recipe will also save you some money.

There are a number of easy green scouring powder recipes that you can try out at home. While most of them are tried and tested formulae, you may be required to put in some amount of experimentation for others before you ultimately get a successful result. Here we take a look at some of the recipes for you try.

  • Take a plastic container with a lid that fits firmly on top. Mix a cup of borax (preferably 20-mule-team borax that is available at all supermarkets), a cup of baking soda, quarter cup of salt and an equal amount of citric acid to it. Mix in around thirty drops of any citrus essential oil, namely tangerine, orange, grapefruit, lemon or a mixture of them all. Shake all of these contents together and your scouring powder will be ready for use.
  • This recipe carries a minute modification to the aforementioned one. Take a cup of borax, a cup of sea salt and a cup of baking soda along with three packs of True Lemon lemonade drink. Add them into a large mixing bowl and whisk together. You can eventually store it all in a container of one quart capacity. Sprinkle on the surface to be cleaned and use a wet brush or sponge to scrub it clean. Finally, rinse off the mess with water.
  • For this recipe, you will require two parts of baking soda, one part of borax powder and another part of salt. Pour all of the ingredients into a bowl or jar and stir them together to form a thorough powdered mix. Before using on a surface, lightly wet it with water while in case of very bad messes, you should use undiluted white vinegar to release the dirt particles.
  • This is the simplest scouring powder recipe you can work with at home, a sponge and baking soda being the only ingredients necessary in this case. Put some sprinkling of baking soda on to a wet cloth or sponge and use it to rub the surface on which you wish to undertake the cleaning process. Rinse off with water and you will have a clean surface to work with.

All of these recipes are very easy to prepare and won't cost a lot as the ingredients can be found at all local supermarkets. They are also non-toxic unlike the chemical products you get in the market. However, it is advisable that you experiment with the products on a small surface in your home before implementing for large scale applications so that in case it produces any negative impact, you won't be left with a substantial loss to deal with.

Having a carpet in your house not only keeps the house clean but also makes the house more attractive. Carpet cleaning leaves your house free of dust and molds that could lead to health complications and allergies. A carpet cleaning routine is important in making your house clean and ensures sufficient fresh air circulates in the house. To ensure a clean carpet the following routines are indispensable. Divide your carpet into sections: This routine is mostly important when it comes to wall to wall carpets. The vacuum phase of carpet cleaning should follow sectional cleaning to ensure that you clean all areas following a particular order. This routine is more thorough and leaves your carpet sparkling. Clean up spills immediately: The next important carpet cleaning routine is cleaning up the mess immediately it happens. This routine helps to eliminate the need to shampoo and clean up the entire carpet due to a single spill. Use an inconspicuous test area: This carpet cleaning routine is indispensable if your carpet is to have a longer life. When applying the cleaning shampoo and other agents, it is an important routine to test the cleaning liquids to prevent discoloring visible areas. Scratching and blotting: Ensure that you first blot the carpet or the spill area with a dry hard brush to ease the cleaning process and reduce the use of cleaning agents and shampoos. Always make it your routine to clean the carpet outwardly. This prevents spreading the stain to other parts of the carpet and ensures that unscathed areas remain so. Always use a clean bath towel to dry the carpet and prevent the carpet from becoming damp. To conclude, it is important to stick to your cleaning routine. It is prudent to have door mats that will arrest all the dirt before it gets to the main carpet. Make it a weekly routine to vacuum your house at least twice a fortnight .Clean all spills immediately to prevent them spreading to other areas. A clear cut and followed routine is indispensable if your carpet has to remain clean and attractive for many years into the future.
